Ottawa, Canada, March 23, 2000 - Precidia Technologies Inc. and IVI Checkmate Corp. (NASDAQ: CMIV); (TSE: IVC/IVI), announced today a strategic partnership to market and distribute the Precidia Ether232 and Ether485 IP protocol converters for use in legacy point-of-sale systems. These converters will enable merchants to migrate their existing legacy equipment onto a more sophisticated Internet (IP) capable system.
By migrating their older legacy POS systems to IP, merchants and systems integrators will benefit from the increased speed, enhanced functionality and reduced costs that Internet based solutions provide.
Deepak Wanner, President, Precidia Technologies Inc., states, "Retailers will now have the ability to migrate their current legacy payment systems, which utilize proprietary communications protocols to IP, today's de facto standard. This capability will allow retailers to participate in value-added programs such as loyalty schemes, as well as improving system maintenance and diagnostics. It also enables the retailer to integrate all legacy equipment and systems onto one standard network, including POS systems."
"The Ether232 and Ether485 IP converters will benefit our first and second tier retailers. These are the companies operating sophisticated semi and fully integrated transaction solutions at the store and head office levels. These merchants will be able to lower their communication costs and improve their support services dramatically, all while enabling faster transactions for the customer and increased functionality for the payment systems," said Geoff Bowen, Executive Vice President and General Manager, IVI Checkmate Ltd.
Ether232 and Ether485 bring substantial benefits to owners of large payment terminal bases. These include multilane retailers and Canadian banks. For instance, if a terminal goes down, under the current situation, an operator has little opportunity to diagnose and rectify the problem quickly. With either the Ether232 or Ether485 integrated into their solution, an authorized employee of the bank could instantly reroute the transactions through a back-up network and maintain the entire system in an operational mode. The same operator could also look at and analyze any terminal on the network for operating efficiency or diagnostic repair. These capabilities are easily accessed through standard Internet software tools like Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.
