Labor Management solutions provider Cignify turned to Precidia to help their customer, a business operator, collect time and attendance data more efficiently. The customer required a solution, which would connect 250 RS232 time clock terminals, via Ethernet, to an existing network, for real time data collection and device monitoring.

The time clock workstation terminal, a VeriFone Trans380, has an RS232 port and a dial port for transmitting time and attendance data. Employees swipe a personalized magnetic stripe card through the terminal and enter their own attendance information. The terminal sends this information to an application that time stamps it and returns it to the terminal, which prints a receipt for the employee's and manager's records. The customer wanted to leverage its existing network infrastructure to process time clock data more efficiently. With the device's RS232 port in use for a receipt printer, they required a solution that would work from the dial port, connecting the terminal to the host via Ethernet for more efficient, cost effective data collection and device management.

AFTERAfter implementing the EtherDial, the customer was able to collect time and attendance data for transmission in real time to the host computer. The EtherDial provided the ideal solution, seamlessly connecting the legacy terminals to an IP network, reducing communications costs, and improving operating efficiency.

The EtherDial connected to the terminal's dial port, packetizing the data and transmitting it to the host computer via Ethernet. This proven solution improved operating efficiency, facilitating payroll processing and planning with real time, accurate data. No changes were required to the existing infrastructure, and new functionality such as device status and log pages became available via a standard web browser, from anywhere on the customer's network.
