 The Challenge

Precidia was selected by one of the world's leading courier companies. Until recently, their delivery personnel filed daily reports on non-deliveries only, via a telephone system. Data collection using this process was limited, and planning was laborious. Our customer was searching for a simple, efficient means of accessing a greater degree of delivery data, from delivery times to digitized signatures, which would also be easy for delivery personnel to operate.

The customer decided to supply their delivery personnel with handheld scanner terminals, which could be used to enter delivery data while in transit. They needed a means to relay the data from the RS232 based terminal to a central host. By connecting to the terminal's serial port, the IP232 modem device received serial data, initiated a point-to-point (PPP) dial-up connection via an ISP, and transmitted the packetized data via Internet to the host. By deploying the IP232, the company, which handles more than 2 million small packages per business day, achieved simplified delivery settlement, reducing delivery time, and facilitating route planning with enhanced information.
