Wireless ATM Connectivity

Dots The Challenge

DirectCash ATM, a leading processor of white-label ATMs in Canada, wanted portable machines in order to provide a strategic offering to its customers for leverage in a competitive market. They wanted a strong value proposition based on speed and cost savings versus dial-up. Their initial focus was wireless networks, which would reduce costs and provide more mobility for ATMs. Cellular digital packet data (CDPD) technology was a possibility but was limited in coverage to only 30% of Canada's population.

Dots Precidia's Solution

Precidia's CellDial™ is a wireless product designed to provide cost savings, mobility and extended ATM management capabilities to the ATM industry. The CellDial connects to the ATM's existing phone cable. It then plugs into a wireless digital handset or radio transceiver, using the wireless modem. The data is then sent over a wireless network.
Telus Mobility provided their wireless and data/IP network for the CellDial solution for DirectCash ATM. Wireless and data/IP, projected to grow 13% and 25% respectively over the next three year, is a strategic focus for Telus Mobility. The White Label ATM industry is one vertical that can benefit for a wireless network. Precidia's CellDial provided an opportunity for both Telus Mobility and DirectCash ATM to offer a mobile solution to the maturing ATM industry.
Testing the CellDial at four different pilot sites ran smoothly and merchants realized the benefits of using an ATM machine with a wireless connection. "It is less costly than our other cellular options, and it's very easy to use," says Jeffrey J. Smith, DirectCash President and CEO. "The CellDial gives us the flexibility to provide our customers with mobility and provide added-value by allowing them to access their ATM data in real-time." With his merchants having transaction times improved by 30-50% and significant cost savings after only 300 transactions per month, Smith plans to deploy CellDial devices in up to 400 ATMs.

Dots Benefits

The ATM industry realizes several benefits with Precidia's CellDial:
  • Reduce Costs
-eliminating the need for a dedicated phone line
-eliminating installation charges and lead-time for cabling
-reducing the complexity of managing installations
-providing no transaction fees for 1-800 or local calls
    -eliminating long distance charges
-providing a cheaper monthly rate with wireless packet data services

  • Generate Revenue
-providing more permanent and temporary ATM locations
-easily relocating under-performing ATMs to more profitable locations

  • Remote Diagnostics
-additional network management capabilities through SNMP are beneficial for
    • statistics and information gathering and reporting, allowing the network provider greater visibility into the merchant/client remote site
    • real time problem diagnosis and network management, translating into even better service to your customers
    • minimizing outage times and limiting the number of dispatched service calls

Dots Conclusion

Precidia's CellDial is a unique wireless solution that provides cost savings, mobility and extended management capabilities to the ATM industry. Unlike other wireless alternatives, the CellDial connects ATMs to existing "always on" wireless networks, guaranteeing continued growth in coverage. By leveraging an "always on" wireless digital network, all dial ATMs and terminals become accessible in real-time, significantly enhancing product supportability.
Precidia is currently working with Telus Mobility and Southern LINC to provide the best quality and range of coverage to the ATM industry. TELUS provides the largest wireless digital coverage for more than 90% of the Canadian population. Southern LINC, a division of Southern Company, has the most complete digital wireless communications network in the Southeast - including Georgia, Alabama, southeast Mississippi and northwest Florida.
