Connecting Wireless Telephone Systems to Third Party Applications
The Challenge
SpectraLink’s Wireless Telephone Systems, which provide mobile communications in the workplace, use SpectraLink’s Open Application Interface (OAI) to communicate with third party applications in functions as diverse as nurse call notification, inhouse paging, alarm and security monitoring, and industrial controls. As illustrated below, the challenge currently faced by SpectraLink's customers is to determine a method of remotely accessing SpectraLink’s OAI from the customer’s network. This would allow customers to run their OAI Application Program on an existing, networkconnected PC rather than requiring the server to be located in the communications room directly connected via an RS232 cable. Some customers do not have space available witin their communication closets or prefer to run the OAI Application Program on a shared PC.

Precidia's Solution
Until recently, the only available solution to this challenge has been to utilize short-haul modems to provide the necessary communications link. Although this solution resolved the customer’s communication challenges, there were still some concerns with the solution, namely:
1. The relatively high cost of the solution
2. The requirement to lay cable from the communic ations room to the OAI Interface Server
3. The installation and modem tuning process can be quite time consuming
