Connecting Wireless Telephone Systems to Third Party Applications

Dots The Challenge

SpectraLink’s Wireless Telephone Systems, which provide mobile communications in the workplace, use SpectraLink’s Open Application Interface (OAI) to communicate with third party applications in functions as diverse as nurse call notification, inhouse paging, alarm and security monitoring, and industrial controls. As illustrated below, the challenge currently faced by SpectraLink's customers is to determine a method of remotely accessing SpectraLink’s OAI from the customer’s network. This would allow customers to run their OAI Application Program on an existing, networkconnected PC rather than requiring the server to be located in the communications room directly connected via an RS232 cable. Some customers do not have space available witin their communication closets or prefer to run the OAI Application Program on a shared PC.

Dots Precidia's Solution

Until recently, the only available solution to this challenge has been to utilize short-haul modems to provide the necessary communications link. Although this solution resolved the customer’s communication challenges, there were still some concerns with the solution, namely:
1. The relatively high cost of the solution
2. The requirement to lay cable from the communic ations room to the OAI Interface Server
3. The installation and modem tuning process can be quite time consuming

Dots Benefits

SpectraLink’s customers realize several significant benefits when the Precidia solution is implemented:
  • Cost Savings
The customer can eliminate costs associated with laying cabling and having a dedicated PC in their communication room.

  • Seamless Integration with Existing Environment
No changes in process, training or equipment are required to implement this solution, and installation is quick and simple.

  • Value-Added Features and Functionality
The Ether232Plus offers several unique features to users, including SNMP capability for better network management, an activity log to track IP connections to and from the device, and the ability to remotely configure the device via Telnet.

Dots Conclusion

Responding to simple configuration commands, the Ether232Plus swiftly incorporates any number of serial devices onto a company's IP network, while enhancing their functionality. Its compact design ensures simple installation. The Ether232Plus is adaptable to current and future networks. What was once stand-alone is now a part of your network, accessible from a central PC.
