Nurse Call Systems

Connect Serial Nurse Call Systems to IP Networks

Dots Challenge

Hospitals and assisted living care centers rely on nurse call systems to provide patients with a means of quickly obtaining help from busy emergency personnel. These systems typically feature two components: a bedside call button, telephone or intercom for the patient, and an alarm received at a nursing station's 'alarm board', or via pager/telephone. The challenge for IT staff in these facilities is to ensure that each component of the nurse call/alarm system can communicate with the LAN/WAN. For example, a hospital might upgrade from a serial to an ethernet-connected call system, but wish to continue using the serial-based 'alarm board' at the nursing station. In other cases, staff may carry internal wireless telephones for alarms, but a serial-based nurse call system cannot communicate with them.

Dots Solution

Precidia's serial networking adapters feature single or multiple serial ports, with an ethernet port. These adapters include the popular iPocket232™, a compact single port RS232 to ethernet converter. A serial nurse call system or 'alarm board' can be connected to a Precidia adapter via its serial port, and the adapter will convert the device's data stream to ethernet, allowing the serial device to interface to an ethernet-based telephone system or application via the LAN/WAN. This approach facilitates efficient communication, while eliminating the cost of replacing a reliable serial device.

Dots Application Diagram

Working together with Precidia's serial networking adapters such as the iPocket232 is NetVu™, Precidia's management server. The management server facilitates enhanced management, monitoring and device deployment. From remotely assigning, configuring and updating units, to identifying problem areas on the network, NetVu is always working to make the transition to IP an easy one.

Dots Benefits

  • Real time alarms can be transmitted from serial systems
  • Seamless integration with existing equipment and applications
  • Retain investment in costly legacy nurse call equipment
  • Improved device monitoring and management
  • Eliminates need for modems and dedicated PCs
  • Management server streamlines deployment and management
Customer Testimonial
"We are using the serial networking adapter from Precidia Technologies to connect our Tel-Tron nurse call to the Emergin WirelessOffice server and Spectralink's OAI. By implementing this complete solution, our medical personnel can now receive nurse call alerts, as well as security alerts, in real time to their Spectralink telephones. The solution has enhanced response times and provided new productivity tools for our busy medical personnel."
